Historic Church Restoration, Tinui

A restoration project.

Originally built in 1902 by Charles Daniell and designed by Clere & Swan Ltd, the Church of the Good Shepherd was relocated from Manawa Road to Blackhill Road in March 2019.
M.B. Brown Ltd was engaged to carry out the structural strengthening and full exterior restoration, completed in April 2025 ahead of the ANZAC reopening service.

Works included the installation of four large buttresses with deep concrete foundations and H5 laminated timber portals, all connected with stainless steel fixings painted black to match the original style. The entire roof was removed and replaced, with extensive framing repairs due to rot and borer damage. The bell house was fully rebuilt, and the original steeple (rebuilt by Masterton Mens Shed) and wind vane reinstated using custom stainless steel fittings.

Due to the presence of lead-based paint, all paint was chemically stripped.
Damaged weatherboards and trims were replaced with custom-matched timber profiles from our joinery workshop. Toughened glass was added over the leadlight windows for protection, and concealed wiring and heritage-style lighting brought the building up to fire code.

A new octagonal deck, ramp, and steps were constructed to provide accessible entry while maintaining the church’s historic character.

This restoration was both technically demanding and deeply rewarding. It required careful coordination between heritage constraints, modern compliance, and a deep respect for the original craftsmanship. We are proud to have played a part in preserving such a significant piece of local heritage.
